The ground breaking topical satirical sketch show, Not The Nine O’ Clock News (it was shown on BBC2 opposite the main evening news) catapulted some of the UK’s up and coming comedy performers into the big time.
First seen in 1979, the group consisted of Rowan Atkinson, Mel Smith, Griff Rhys Jones and Pamela Stephenson. Chris Langham also appeared in the first series.

The show used a variety of sketch formats, from send-ups of contemporary TV shows and films, political parody, to quirky short scenes maybe lasting only a few seconds, and spoof musical numbers. It also took advantage of video editing techniques and computer graphics

This is the bad language sketch, more fondly known as the “That’s My Whole Big Thing Point!” sketch as that is one of Atkinson’s more memorable lines.

A vicar and a university professor are guests on a high-brow talk show and are discussing the creeping intrusion of bad language into television. But they are themselves are swearing and uttering obscenities, take me, take me, without even knowing it!
