Nice Video, Shame About the Song

There is a rich history of parody and satire in British comedy, and the music scene has certainly not been spared.

From iconic rock ballads to synth-pop hits, every genre has been mercilessly mocked by some of the UK’s finest comedy performers. In fact, many people still remember these parodies decades later – sometimes just as vividly as the original songs themselves.

The 1980s in particular, was a fertile era for musical parody, ranging from the family-friendly sketches of The Two Ronnies to the edgier, more alternative comedy style of Not The Nine O’Clock News.

Here are a few of my favourites:

Adam and the Nats (The Two Ronnies)

Ronnie Corbett as Adam Ant trying to woo Spiderwoman

Maltloaf (Alas Smith and Jones)

Mel Smith struts his stuff to impress a dragged up Griff Rhys Jones

Super Duper (Not the Nine O’Clock News)

An Abba spoof featuring the cast (including Griff in drag once again!)

Did You Know?

Most of the musical score on Not the Nine O’Clock News were produced by by British TV composing legend Howard Goodall who was sharing a house with Rowan Atkinson at the time. Rowan asked the more musically proficient Howard to help out with the musical numbers on NTNOCN (just on it’s third episode at that point).
