Irish actor Damien Molony has taken over as Jim Bergerac in the 2025 reboot currently showing on the U&Drama channel. But what does the original Jim Bergerac, John Nettles think?
This fascinating documentary brings together Bergerac’s old and new, revealing among other things that Nettles (looking good at 80!) thought he was too old to make a cameo appearance!
Our full review of ‘new’ Bergerac coming soon!
Bergerac Behind the Scenes (1987)
BBC reporter Bob Wellings goes behind the scenes on filming for the 1987 Boxing Day special “Treasure Hunt”.
He reveals that a posh garden party scene serves a mix of burnt sugar and soda water as Champagne, Terrance Alexander has his lunch interrupted by school children and a local (real) detective complains that Bergerac’s detection rate is higher than his!
How has Jersey Changed Since Bergerac’s Heyday?
Bergerac Facts
- Created by Robert Banks Stewart who had just finished series 2 of Shoestring. Trevor Eve didn’t want to go for a third so Bob swapped Bristol for Jersey and Bergerac was Born!
- Bob had sketched out the first episode of Bergerac on the back of an envelope while flying over Jersey
- The 1987 series could have been the last! The new controller of BBC1 Jonathan Powell rescued it for another 4 series.
- 750,000 watched the first episode of the new series – 15 million tuned in for the first ever episode in 1981!
- Jim’s iconic car the Triumph Roadster was very unreliable and uncomfortable to drive. Thankfully the maximum speed limit on Jersey is just 40mph!
- After Bergerac, John Nettles of course went on to great success as another TV detective – this time as Tom Barnaby in Midsomer Murders
