Are You Being Satirised?

If you are going to satirise the classic department store sitcom Are You Being Served?, the obvious candidate to make fun of would be Mr Inman, the camp mummy’s boy who works in the men’s department.

But no, our Aussie cousins – who by the way go their own AYBS series in 1980 with John Humphries reprising his role as Mr Inman, will have to go one step further and parody the entire show!

Entitled Are You Being Shagged?, it bills itself as the world’s first single entendre comedy – goodbye subtlety! This series of short scenes was originally shown on the Australian comedy show, Chaser’s War on Everything.

This was a satirical comedy sketch show that ran from 2006-2009 and featured performers from The Chaser, a comedy group who originally started as a university newspaper (it now continues online) and have carried out some controversial pranks, both in print form and on the TV show.

I’ve managed to find this entry at the back of the AYBS parody cupboard – it’s from an ITV comedy show called End of Part One and starred among others, Sue Holderness of Only Fools fame and Fred Harris who was better known from Children’s TV and technology programmes of the time.

The show was written by prolific comedy writing duo, David Renwick and Andrew Marshall who also penned the newspaper-based sitcom, Hot Metal.
